Snowboarding Facts

These are some facts and statistics about the 2005/2006 snow industry. All information is provided by the 2005/2006 Canadian Ski Council Demographic.

Skiers and boarders in Atlantic Canada and Ontario tend to be more active, with
approximately 1/3 participating more than 20 times the previous year. Quebec skiers and boarders are the least active, with nearly 2/3 saying they skied or boarded less than 3 times the previous year. The number of Canadians who only snowboard increased to a total of 912,000 participants this season.
For the first time, the proportion of snowboarders 24 years old and under is below 70% (67% vs. 77% last year). Most snowboarders are men (60%).
Perhaps because it is younger, the snowboard market is more diverse ethnically than the other disciplines.
2 out of 3 snowboarders are from Quebec and Ontario but do not live in large cities (population over 1 million).
Snowboarders living in households with incomes of $50,000+ increased sharply to 73% (66% last year).
Forthe first time, less than 80% of snowboarders live in a household with children under 18, and teens still accounted for almost half of the total.

The proportion of snowboarders with a full-time or part-time job decreased to
57% in 2005.
People snowboarded less last year compared to the previous year (5.9 days
vs. 6.3 days in 2004).

More Facts

The snowboarder segment is typically a young, male, not from big cities, living in a high income household, probably still in high school or college, with a part-time job, and generally snowboards 5.9 days a year.

Skiers and boarders in Ontario have lower levels of ability than those in other regions, with over
¼ saying they are there for the first time or are beginners. Quebec and Western Canada have
the highest percentage of advanced or expert skiers. Ontario may be in a better position in
some respects as the lower ability levels indicate more people learning to ski and board. In addition, Ontario has the highest percentage of young participants, with over 20% under the
age of 14.
